Eligibility for publicly funded healthcare
New Zealand has a publicly funded healthcare system that is available for families who meet eligibility criteria.
If you are not eligible for publicly funded healthcare, you will be charged by Te Toka Tumai Auckland for your care.
Te Toka Tumai is required by the Ministry of Health to gather proof of eligibility status for publicly funded healthcare from each patient we see. In the case of an emergency this will be sought as soon afterward as possible. Please don't be offended - this is standard practice for all patients of any background. Even if you are a New Zealand citizen, we are required to confirm that status.
You will need to bring documentation (eg passport or birth certificate) to prove your eligibility to either the Outpatients Reception desk when you come to your clinic appointment, or to the Cashier's desk on Level Five Auckland City Hospital next to the reception desk. This desk is staffed from 8.30am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday.
