Cardiology
  • Take feeding history: duration of each feed or amount taking at each feed, frequency of feeding, any supplements (e.g. Calogen)

  • Observe and record feed intake via daily feed record chart or fluid balance chart

  • Consider referral to lactation consultant for breastfeeding support if relevant / concerns about quality of feeding or maternal milk supply

  • Maximise bottle feeding technique if formula fed and consider referral to SLT if concerns

  • Medical team to determine maximum feed volume allowance (ml/kg/day) to guide intervention strategies

Birthweight is usually regained by 2 weeks of age in term infants.

Expected weight gain for pre-term infants

Good growth for preterm babies is 15 - 20g per kg body weight per day.
As they approach 40 weeks gestational age, weight gain will slow to 150 to 200g per week.
